In the new issue of Shindig!, in addition to some fantastic features, regulars and a brilliant reviews section, you can find my piece on psychedelic funk pioneers, Maxayn. If you’ve had your ear to the ground in recent months, you’ll know that their trilogy of albums (1972-1974) has just been reissued by Cherry Red and David Nathan’s Soul Music Records. And what a fantastic package it is, too, with archival photographs, tributes from Brenda Russell and PP Arnold, and a 5000-word Maxayn history (written by me). For a great introduction to the band, why not start with my Shindig! piece and then take a listen? For years, when there have been music mag lists of the funksters who changed the world, we see Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station, Parliament and Funkadelic. But Maxayn belongs right in the middle and it’s time they took their rightful place. Maxayn were Maxayn Lewis (lead vocals, keyboards, piano, French horn), Andre Lewis, Marlo Henderson and Emry Thomas. All four lent their songwriting talents to the group. Shindig! is available digitally or in print…
