More than once at Record Collector, we’ve attempted to find out the story behind a moody, atsmopheric 1981 synth-pop single, Wasteland by Strange Images (B-side, The House Of Shadows). Prompted by a recent tweet (aka X) by Danny Baker, who also tried to find out about them a year or so ago, we’re redoubling our efforts. What little we know is that both tracks were written by Paul Wormull. The single label also bears the text: “Produced by Dave & Strange Images at Octopus Studios April 17th 1981”. The single came out on Paintbox Records (which looks to be a private-press setup created by the band) with the cat number S/81/CUS 1067. Both tracks were uploaded to YouTube by group member, Nev (possible surname: Ball). Wasteland is here and The House Of Shadows is here. Also on YouTube is the text: “Our Self Financed Single – Recorded in Octopus Studios a rural 8-track in Stowupland, Nev – Drums/Syn Drum, Rick – Bass, Paul – Lead Guitar, Alan – Rhythm Guitar, Brian – Lead Vocals, Keyboards – From Essex Written by Paul”. The single has a £200 guide price on 45cat.com
