Research for Record Collector’s November 2024 Genesis feature turned up a fun factoid; one of the people who’d photographed the group during the creation of their Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album turned out to have had a music career of his own. Not only that, it was music that was in the process of being dusted down and re-released. 50/50 were Richard Haines (keyboards, guitars, songwriting, backing vocals) and David Cowles (lead vocals, songwriting). They signed with PRT (the new name Pye Records gave itself in the 80s) and issued two singles that didn’t get much attention. But it turns out there’s much more to their story than that. I spoke to Richard to get the full 50/50 story for RC Nov 2024, just as the 50/50 catalogue (including the two singles plus dozens and dozens of previously unreleased recordings from the same period) hit the streaming platforms.
