In the Christmas 2019 issue of Record Collector, I look into the life and work of singer/songwriter, the late Lesley Duncan, for the Under The Radar slot. I spoke to Jimmy Horowitz and Tony Cox, Duncan’s producer/husbands. Horowitz, an exceptionally talented arranger and producer, helped shape Duncan’s five albums. Cox took over for the handful of singles Duncan issued from the late 1970s to the 1980s. Both of them generously shared reminiscences, giving me greater insight than ever before into this gifted, private woman whose talent was inversely commensurate with her interest in fame. The new Lesley Duncan anthology on Cherry Red, Lesley Step Lightly, brings together her three GM Records albums with a selection of live recordings and, most excitingly, her non-album singles and an album’s worth of previously unreleased recordings made with Cox. This was preceded by a Cherry Red collection, Sing Lesley Sing, anthologising her CBS years and a one-off single for RCA. Now all that remains is for someone to license all the singles Duncan made in the 1960s before her album deal.
