Herewith my piece, The ‘Gay Men Are Misogynists’ Movement. In the last two years, I’ve witnessed an exponentional increase in the number of comment pieces about misogyny among gay men. It’s as if a movement is afoot, and it’s one I take issue with not because I think there are no gay men who are misogynists but because I object vehemently to the whole idea of ‘gay misogyny’. It carries with it the lingering implication that homosexuality is a condition causing its ‘sufferers’ to hate women. We don’t talk of ‘straight misogyny’ or ‘straight misogynists’ and that is a homophobic double-standard. To speak of ‘gay misogyny’ is to revive via stealth a harmful, mid-20th century homophobic stereotype – the creepy, woman-hating homosexual. I’m concerned enough to have written about it twice, and here is my most recent take on the subject.
