It’s coming back at last…the wonderful music of Maxayn, the psychedelic funk band helmed by Maxayn and Andre Lewis, plus Marlo Henderson and Emry Thomas. The Maxayn band came together in the early 1970s, each member already a high profile figure with an impressive rock’n’roll CV. Together, they made three groundbreaking albums for Capricorn (distributed by Warners). Their music was loved by the cognoscenti and almost broke through to the mainstream in 1973, hindered by unfortunate distribution problems. They were adored as a live band with a formidable reputation preceding them.

I’m so delighted to have been involved in bringing this music – too good to miss – back to the market. It has never been reissued before; a real oversight that can now be rectified. I’ll be back with more Maxayn news and history as the release date (late October) approaches. Go here or here to order your copy of Maxayn Reloaded – The Complete Recordings 1972-1974. Thanks to Maxayn, Alan Abrahams, Cherry Red and Soul Music Records, all of whom it has been a great pleasure to work with to make this long-awaited project take form.

And if you haven’t yet heard the Maxayn band, then you’ve almost certainly heard Maxayn Lewis because she’s had a parallel career as one of the world’s most in-demand session/backing singers, appearing on recordings by Celine Dion, Bonnie Raitt, Brenda Russell, Duran Duran and many more. There are so many feathers to her cap, it would require a book to do them justice; Maxayn was also one of Ike & Tina Turner’s Ikettes, is a pre-eminent vocal coach, pianist/keyboard player, an accomplished songwriter (as the Maxayn albums demonstrate) and much, much more…
